ISPA-Supported CA Mattress Recycling Bill Amended

Senator Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana) has amended the bill (SB 245) he introduced last month on ISPA’s behalf to create a practical and efficient mattress recycling program in California. The new amendments provide a detailed framework for creating a mattress recycling organization that will have the authority to set and collect an eco-fee at retail to fund the collection and recycling of used mattresses.

The legislation is expected to be heard in the Senate’s Environmental Quality Committee in the next few weeks. Competing mattress recycling legislation by Senator Loni Hancock (D-Oakland) – which ISPA opposes because it is costly and inefficient — is expected to be considered by the Committee as well.
