The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has announced that beginning November 1, 2022, mattresses, textiles and organics can no longer be landfilled in Massachusetts or transferred to out-of-state landfills.

ISPA and other trade groups had opposed the timing of the landfill ban because the state lacks the necessary infrastructure to recycle these categories of waste. To help address that problem, ISPA has also advocated for the passage of mattress recycling legislation in Massachusetts to increase that state’s ability to process mattresses that can no longer be landfilled.

ISPA plans to continue advocating for changes to the ban.
