The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission has initiated a rulemaking process to address safety concerns with adult portable bedrails in response to a petition brought by more than 60 public health groups. Bedrails have caused numerous accidents involving mostly older adults. In 2017, ASTM established F3186 – 17, a voluntary standard for adult portable bed rails and related products. According to the CPSC, however, a mandatory standard is needed because many manufacturers are not complying with ASTM F3186 – 17 and accidents continue to occur.
