As a reminder, as of Jan. 1, 2021, California law now requires that ALL retailers that deliver a new mattress to a California consumer offer to pick up the consumer’s discarded mattress at no additional charge regardless of sales format or delivery method. The new requirements expand the existing pick up requirement that has applied to deliveries made by brick-and-mortar stores for several years to also include mattresses sold by e-commerce retailers that are delivered by common carrier. Read more here.
Recognizing that pick up is a new requirement for online mattress sellers and others that were previously exempt, the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) has developed tools to assist with compliance:
To help get the discarded mattresses recycled free of charge, MRC has developed its Commercial Volume Program, which provides retailers and others that collect at least 100 used mattresses or box springs a trailer for storing and transporting those units to the closest recycler at no cost.
