ISPA’s goal in creating this web page is to provide the mattress industry with a common sustainability vocabulary based on definitions from reliable sources to increase industry-wide understanding of these terms. To advance sustainability within our industry, it is important to make sure that we are speaking the same language.

Third-party sustainability certifications help companies build credibility, increase brand loyalty and enhance environmental performance. To support ISPA members, staff collaborated with the ISPA Sustainability Committee to compile a list of certifications relevant to the mattress industry.

The Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) is a nonprofit organization formed by the mattress industry to operate recycling programs in states that have passed mattress recycling laws.

The Sleep Products Sustainability Program (SP2) helps mattress manufacturers reduce waste while increasing operational efficiencies. The program was developed as part of the industry’s commitment to environmental stewardship and complements MRC’s sustainability efforts. Training, program resources and certification are all offered at no-cost to eligible California-based mattress manufacturers.
