Last week, legislation to limit FRs in upholstered furniture was introduced in the Iowa Legislature (HF 2063). The bill defines the term “flame-retardant chemical” broadly to mean “a chemical or chemical compound for which a functional use is to resist or inhibit the spread of fire.” The bill would limit the use of those FRs to 1000 ppm in fabric, cushioning material and coverings. It is unclear at this point whether the definition of the term “upholstered furniture” is broad enough to include mattresses.  ISPA will track this bill closely.
