The New York legislature is considering two very different mattress recycling bills, one that ISPA supports and the other which we will oppose. NY AB 6436, which ISPA supports, has been introduced in the Assembly. In the Senate, however, NY SB 6419B contains several provisions that ISPA must oppose. Among other things, the Senate bill would require mattress producers to fund mattress recycling in New York, as opposed to funding operations through a small fee consumers pay when they buy a new mattress, as is currently done in the four other states that have enacted mattress recycling laws. ISPA is engaging with legislators and other stakeholders to oppose the Senate bill and to enact a practical mattress recycling law in New York that is consistent with the approach that other states have taken.
