The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) held a public meeting on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 to discuss the Part 1632 smoldering-cigarette flammability standard for mattresses and mattress pads and the Part 1633 open-flame flammability standard for mattresses and mattress sets. ISPA spoke in support of amending the existing ticking substitution test under Part 1632 and simplifying the mattress flammability standards. At the meeting, members of the industry discussed current challenges encountered in complying with Part 1632 and Part 1633 and suggested ideas for improving both standards without compromising consumer safety.

This meeting followed an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking and request for public comments to help inform the CPSC staff and encourage participation from industry throughout the rulemaking process. Interested parties may submit written comments by July 5, 2023. A detailed list of topics about which CPSC staff would like to receive comments can be found in Section IV of the Federal Register Notice.

ISPA plans to submit written comments.
