As ISPA previously reported, flawed mattress recycling legislation is advancing in the New York State Senate. In February, NY S 1463 was reported from the New York Senate Environmental Conservation Committee and referred to the New York Senate Finance Committee. ISPA submitted this memo of opposition before the Finance Committee hearing on Tuesday, March 4th. Despite ISPA’s efforts, in another closed-door hearing, NY S 1463 was reported from the Senate Finance Committee and is now eligible for a floor vote in the New York State Senate.

Unfortunately, NY A 1209 (the Assembly partner legislation to NY S 1463) also was scheduled for a hearing on Tuesday March 4th in the Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee. ISPA submitted its memo of opposition to members of the Committee before the hearing but, nonetheless, this legislation was advanced and reported to the Assembly Codes Committee.

Both the Senate and Assembly bills are moving much faster and earlier than anticipated this legislative session. Thank you to those members and supply chain partners in the state that reached out to their representatives. We need to continue the pressure on these bills, to ensure that this flawed, harmful legislation does not become law in New York. ISPA alerted members and affiliates with a presence in the state to contact their respective Senators and Assembly representatives and will now reach out to the entire membership to participate in defeating this legislation.
