On July 16th, the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment convened a hearing on “Beyond the Blue Bin: Forging a Federal Landscape for Recycling Innovation and Economic Growth.” Advanced recycling, which refers to a suite of technologies that break down used plastics into their original components to remanufacture them into new products, was discussed during the hearing. Advanced recycling methods are critical to expanding recycling rates and creating new end markets for certain materials used in the mattress industry.

ISPA and MRC actively research innovations to solve end-market challenges associated with hard-to-recycle mattress components, specifically foam and textiles. ISPA’s comments focus on how advanced recycling methods have the potential to improve recycling rates and create new end markets for certain materials used in the mattress industry, such as post-consumer polyurethane foam.
