ISPA recently joined the Recycling Leadership Council (RLC), a cross-industry coalition in support of modern, national recycling standards that strengthen U.S. manufacturing, build consumer trust in recycling, and reduce plastic waste. Led by the Consumer Brands Association, the recently re-launched RLC is focused on advancing practical, bipartisan solutions to increase U.S. recycling capabilities.

The RLC was formed in response to the fragmented U.S. recycling system. Challenges identified by the RLC include:

  • Inconsistent recycling definitions that create regulatory uncertainty.
  • Limited investment in modern recycling infrastructure and slow adoption of new technologies that could handle more types of plastic and reduce plastic waste.
  • Declining consumer confidence in recycling and recycled content claims.
