The Hawaii House of Representatives (HI HR 184) and Hawaii State Senate (HI SR 29) both adopted study resolutions to establish a Mattress Stewardship Design Working Group. Once it is convened, ISPA intends to participate in the working group to share lessons learned from MRC’s decade of operating statewide mattress recycling programs.   

Administered by the Hawaii Department of Health (DOH), the working group will evaluate and make recommendations on the structure and implementation of a statewide mattress stewardship program in Hawaii. The working group will include representation from each solid waste division in Hawaii, a mattress manufacturer, a mattress retailer, a mattress recycler, and representatives from Hawaii’s State Legislature. A report of the working group’s findings, including any proposed legislation, must be submitted to the Hawaii State Legislature 20 days before the 2027 Hawaii Legislative Session.
