On June 18, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) published a notice in the Federal Register seeking public comments on a proposed renewal of the information collection requirements regarding 16 CFR 1632 (smoldering ignition test) and 16 CFR 1633 (open-flame test) flammability standards for mattresses, mattress pads, and mattress sets. The current information collection period is set to expire on October 31, 2026. Both flammability standards require mattress manufacturers and importers to comply with recordkeeping and labeling requirements.

The CPSC is soliciting written comments on the following topics:

  1. Whether the information collection is necessary for the CPSC to do its job effectively
  1. Whether its estimate of the compliance burden described in the Federal Register Notice is accurate
  1. Whether the quality, utility, or clarity of the information collected could be improved
  1. Whether the burden on respondents could be reduced through automation or other technology

The public comment period closes on August 17, 2026. ISPA is considering submitting public comments in response to this request.
