Governor Newsom Signs Law Limiting Chatbots
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 1609 into law, which limits how large businesses can rely on customer service chatbots. The new law applies to businesses with over 500 million in annual revenue that provide goods or services to California consumers. AB 1069 requires large businesses to make a good-faith effort to connect a customer to a human within 15 minutes of a request or schedule an appointment later. Businesses must also disclose when a consumer is talking to a chatbot rather than a human and prominently list contact information for live, human support. The new law was highlighted in a press release from Governor Newsom.
