Developed with Purdue University’s Sustainability and Environmental Engineering program as a two-semester senior capstone project, this new resource for ISPA members maps environmental impacts, hotspots, and opportunities across the mattress value chain. Guided by ISPA’s Sustainability Committee, the project offers practical insights to help companies understand their role in the value chain, reduce environmental impacts, and prepare for evolving market and regulatory expectations. 

Some key findings from the assessment include: 

  • Environmental impacts are concentrated upstream in the value chain, making raw material selection, component production, material innovation, and supplier engagement key opportunities for improvement.  
  • Greater transparency, collaboration, and access to consistent sustainability data can help companies better understand environmental impacts, identify opportunities, and make more informed decisions.  
  • Meaningful progress will require industry-wide collaboration across the entire mattress value chain to advance practical sustainability solutions.
