Manufacturing Activity Contracts at a Slower Pace in June
According to the National Association of Manufacturers’ (NAM) Monday Economic Report for this week, the ISM Manufacturing Index and the S&P Global PMI showed modest improvements in manufacturing activity. The ISM Manufacturing Index rose to 49.0 in June, up from 48.5 in May—an improvement, though still in contraction, indicating sluggish conditions. Meanwhile, the S&P Global U.S. Manufacturing PMI was 52.9 in June, up marginally from 52.0 in May.
Despite these gains, the overall outlook remained subdued. Positive sentiment among manufacturers was unchanged from May and continued to lag the survey’s long-run average. Notably, both surveys recorded a decline in new orders, suggesting that many purchasing managers remain cautious amid persistent tariff pressures.
